European Travel Tips

Passports - If you are pressed for time, we recommend using the Fast Track delivery option for getting your passport. This costs a little extra, but you will get you your passport in about two weeks (instead of a 6 weeks or more). This service is provided through selected post office locations, making it easier and more convenient than in the past. Now you can download Passport forms right from the Internet! Forms are available through www.USPS.com site in .PDF format. Forms are also available at your local Post Office™ and many public libraries.
Electronics in Europe - If you plan to bring electronic equipment on your trip such as a hair dryer, computer, etc., you will need a voltage outlet converter. European outlets use a different voltage than what is used in the USA. The outlet plug shape is also different in Europe than in the USA and may not allow you to plug your electronic device into the socket. We recommend picking up a voltage converter from any Radio Shack or travel store. The outlet can cost you as much as $20-$40.
Cell Phone - Most US cell phones do not work in Europe. European cell phones have a different "chip" in them and if you wolud like to have cell phone service in Europe, we recommend renting a phone for your trip. Call a local cell phone provider for details. Some travelers who spend a lot of time away from the USA may purchase a special phone which can be used anywhere. This is more expensive and not necessary for the the casual traveler who is going on a yearly European holiday.
Money - Euros are the currency for many European countries and can be purchased ahead of time here in the US through your local bank. Arrange to get your euros about two weeks ahead of time, as it takes time for your bank to receive them from their main office. We recommend bringing a few euros with you on your trip, as you may need them at the airport to get a taxi, etc. Once you are settled into your hotel, you can use the many ATM machines around Europe to get Euros at the best exchange rate. Travelers cheques are not taken everywhere, especially outside of the main cities, and thus having come cash and an ATM card are essential.
Personal Items - Paper products such as toilet paper and tissues are not always available in Europe. To make sure you have enough, we recommend travelers pack extra in their suitcase. Travel packs of Kleenex and hand wipes will come in handy on your trip. A word to the wise, Europeans do not seem to use as many paper products as Americans, so bring your own.
Travel towels - It is always best to travel light but be prepared. The Aquis hair towel is the softest, most absorbent and lightest travel towel available. It can be used to quickly dry your hair and can double as a body towel in a pinch. Its compact size and absorbency make it a must have for your next travel adventure.
Travel soaps - Soap may also be at a premium, depending on where you stay. You can bring along your own european luxury soap in a handy travel case. Roger & Gallett carry a variety of wonderful perfumed soaps that come in their own travel case and can easily be tucked into your travel bag.
Shower gel - If you love your bath or shower gel, you can pack a small bottle that will travel well in your toiletries bag. One suggestion is Island Soap's Hawaiian bath gel which comes in a smaller plastic bottle with enough bath gel for at least a week of travel. Bon Voyage..
